Chiefs recap and look-ahead: two straight losses, the AFC West lead gone, and the Jets at Arrowhead
A 20-3 loss at Seattle and a fourth-quarter collapse at Denver cost the Chiefs first place. Both games from ESPN's box scores, and the four games ahead.

The Chiefs started 5-0 and have lost twice since: 20-3 at Seattle on Oct. 25, and 28-24 at Denver on Sunday after leading by 11 in the fourth quarter. The second loss handed the Broncos first place in the AFC West. Kansas City is 5-2, a half game back, and the AFC's No. 5 seed going into Week 9. The Jets (2-6) visit Arrowhead on Sunday. Here are both games from ESPN's box scores, and the four games ahead.
The last two games
Seahawks 20, Chiefs 3 · Sunday, Oct. 25, at Seattle
The defending Super Bowl champions handed the Chiefs their first loss, and Kansas City never led. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and a 28-yard touchdown, and Seattle ran for 153 yards, 100 of them by Emanuel Wilson, who scored the clinching touchdown from 21 yards out with 3:47 left. The Seahawks converted 11 of 16 third downs and held the ball for almost 36 minutes.
Kansas City managed 213 yards and never reached the red zone; its closest approach was Seattle's 27, ESPN noted. Patrick Mahomes completed 19 of 33 for 165 yards with an interception. Kenneth Walker III, facing the team he won a Super Bowl MVP award with, ran 14 times for 36 yards, a season low. Harrison Butker made a 50-yarder and missed two other attempts. The one bright spot was cornerback Nohl Williams, who picked off Sam Darnold in the end zone at the end of the first half and returned it 65 yards. The Chiefs played without tackle Josh Simmons (injured reserve, back), right tackle Jaylon Moore (concussion) and receivers Rashee Rice (hamstring) and Tyquan Thornton (injured reserve, ankle).
Broncos 28, Chiefs 24 · Sunday, Nov. 1, at Denver
For three quarters this was the Chiefs' best offensive game in weeks. Mahomes threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Rice, back from his hamstring injury, 73 yards to rookie running back Emmett Johnson and 4 yards to Noah Gray, and Kansas City led 24-13 after three quarters. Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson caught five passes for 128 yards, the most by a rookie running back in franchise history, according to the AP.
Then it came apart. Andy Reid punted on fourth-and-inches near midfield early in the fourth quarter, and Denver drove 80 yards for Bo Nix's 2-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins and a two-point conversion to Jaylen Waddle: 24-21. On the next Chiefs drive, Mahomes took a 6-yard sack on third-and-2 at the Denver 30, and Butker missed from 54. Two plays later Jonah Coleman turned a short catch into a 51-yard gain and then ran in from 5 yards with 1:56 left.
Johnson's 44-yard kickoff return gave the Chiefs one more chance, and they reached the Denver 4 with 35 seconds left. Walker got to the 1, a pass fell incomplete and safety JL Skinner stopped Walker for no gain. On fourth down Mahomes hit Rice for what would have been the winning touchdown, but Moore was flagged for a false start. From the 6, Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on the final play, ESPN's Jeff Legwold reported. The Chiefs were 80-2 with Mahomes when leading by 10 or more in the fourth quarter before Sunday, ESPN's Nate Taylor wrote. They committed 11 penalties for 105 yards and pressured Nix on two of his 34 dropbacks. Denver has now won 15 straight one-score games, and the teams split their season series after Kansas City's 31-10 win in Week 1.
Against the DraftKings lines ESPN lists, the Chiefs did not cover either game: they were 3-point underdogs at Seattle and 1.5-point underdogs at Denver. The Seattle game stayed under its 43.5 total; Denver went over 41.5. Each final's recap and closing line is on its game page: Seattle, Denver.
Through seven games, Mahomes has 1,795 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, and Walker has 770 rushing yards and six touchdowns, by ESPN's count.
